Acura TL Review - What the Auto Press Says

The 2012 Acura TL ranks 15 out of 21 Upscale Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 34 published reviews and test drives of the Acura TL, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Reviewers think the 2012 Acura TL is ideal as both a comfortable daily commuter and a powerful weekend sport sedan, but some still can’t get past its polarizing exterior.

The 2012 Acura TL is a happy medium for shoppers looking for a competent daily driver and powerful sport sedan. Reviewers think its spacious interior and standard features, like Bluetooth and an iPod connection, make it a good value in the upscale midsize car segment. “It’s ideal for those wanting an athletic and aggressive car that nonetheless treats its occupants to a reasonably smooth ride and an accommodating interior with a generous assortment of high-tech features,” says Forbes.

The 2012 TL has a base V6 engine that is more powerful than the base six-cylinder on the BMW 3-Series, five-cylinder turbo on the Volvo S60and V6 on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Test drivers say the TL’s base V6 is strong, quiet and quick, while the TL’s optional all-wheel drive is liked for its excellent grip. If you want the TL to be more fun on twisty roads, the automotive press suggests upgrading to Acura’s SH-AWD.

The 2011 Acura TL had a reputation among reviewers and consumers for having an ugly front end. For 2012, Acura dialed-down the aggressively-styled exterior to give shoppers a more sedate-looking car. The automaker hopes to appeal to a broader spectrum of shoppers.

Test drivers dislike the 2012 TL’s small trunk and button-heavy center console. Despite these shortcomings, reviewers agree that shoppers who want a reliable, fun-to-drive luxury car will definitely want to test drive the 2012 Acura TL.

Volkswagen Passat  Review -

The 2012 Volkswagen Passat ranks 5 out of 19 Affordable Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of  19 published reviews and test drives of the Volkswagen Passat, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Reviewers think the redesigned 2012 Volkswagen Passat is now a good choice, as evidenced by being named the 2012 Motor Trend Car of the Year.

Though the 2010 VW Passat’s high price put it out of reach for a lot of midsize car buyers, Volkswagen completely revamped the Passat for 2012. Now that its price is in line with the rest of the class, the automotive press thinks it should be on most midsize car buyers’ lists.

Shoppers will immediately notice that the new Passat is bigger than the model it replaces. Volkswagen added more back seat legroom and test drivers are very happy with the increased space inside the new Passat. One reviewer says the legroom is so plentiful, it rivals that found in full-size sedans.

Most reviewers agree that the Lexus RX 350 is one of the most well-rounded luxury midsize SUVs on the market.  While it’s not meant for going off-road (few cars in this class are), most reviewers say that the RX excels at the easy elegance and comfort that luxury buyers are looking for.  As an added bonus, the RX has one of the best fuel economy ratings in the class.

“The RX is comfortable and especially stylish inside, with good cargo capacity and Lexus dealer’s reputation for superior customer service,” says Market Watch. “Crossover shoppers could do a lot worse.”

BMW 6-Series  Review -

The BMW 6-Series is completely redesigned for the 2012 model year. With this update, the 6-Series gets a more powerful engine and an updated exterior. Reviewers say it’s sleeker than before, but it doesn’t knock their socks off.

The automotive industry deemed the 2010 BMW 6-Series a beautiful and upscale luxury coupe that would never be a true sports car. Now, it looks like BMW wants to make the 6-Series sportier for the 2012 model year. The automaker began with a complete redesign, and gave the exterior and the engine the most updates. Automotive journalists who’ve seen the 650i say it’s more streamline than last year, but it got a little bigger. They like that the 2012 model isn’t has chunky, but don’t think the upgrades to the front grille make much of a difference. It still looks a lot like the conservative 2010 model. The 6-Series also grew inside, but so far, interior space is pretty much the same: the front seats are comfortable and the rear row is so tight that you can forget about putting people back there.

The engine, however, received a more significant upgrade. It now sports a 4.4-liter V8TwinPower Turbo engine. Compared to the 2010 model which had a 4.8-liter V8, the 4.4-liter makes 40 more horsepower and 90 more pound-feet of torque. Few journalists have tested this engine, so there are few critiques available. However, journalists from Autoblog had a chance to take it for a drive, and say that the 650i convertible is grand tourer – just like the 2010.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you’re after a powerful sports car that’s best suited for weekend drives and commuting in style, the 2012 BMW 6-Series may be the perfect fit.
